Torrey Smith refers to President Trump’s statement as so many lies

Torrey Smith has become the first player from the Eagles’ Super Bowl championship team to react publicly to President Trump calling off the team’s visit to the White House. Smith now plays for the Panthers.

So many lies smh, Smith tweeted. Here are some facts: 1. Not many people were going to go. 2. No one refused to go simply because Trump insists folks stand for the anthem. 3. The President continues to spread the false narrative that players are anti military.

The President cited the national anthem as the reason for canceling the visit, with the Eagles expected to send only a small contingent. It is not yet known how many players intended to make the trip..

Trump’s comments could be a way to rile up a GOP base in advance of a midterm election seen as a referendum on the president. Trump’s job approval rating remained in negative territory, with 51 percent disapproving of his performance in office and 40 percent approving. Among Republicans, however, his job approval rating was 86 percent.

The poll was released two days after Trump canceled a planned visit by the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles and replaced it with what he called a ceremony to celebrate America. Many players had decided to skip the traditional White House gathering with the president.

Lackluster running game? They drafted the best running back college football has produced in years in Saquon Barkley.

The conduct of sports wagering-related activities by persons or entities prior to the final passage of this legislation may bear upon their suitability for licensure under the anticipated law, it continued.

Zanzuccki added: It should be fully understood that any improprieties or adverse conduct related to any unregulated activities would have the potential to jeopardize their ability to be licensed for sports wagering under the new law.

Glover Quin back with Lions for minicamp

Safety Glover Quin is one of several Lions players with contract incentives tied to the offseason workout program, but the Fords won’t have to hand the veteran an extra $250,000 this year.

Quin opted not to take part in the voluntary portions of Detroit’s program, which led to questions about whether he considered retiring when he did report for Tuesday’s start of a mandatory three-day minicamp. Quin said players at his age, he turned 32 in January, have to gauge how much I have left, but that uncertainty about playing wasn’t the reason for his absence.

We are fighting for racial and social equality.

Unfortunately for Howard, he might have to wait for a big payday. The 2016 fifth-round pick has crushed expectations, but his rookie contract is only half complete, and the Bears probably aren’t feeling a lot of pressure to spend big at a position with a short shelf life.

The amount of money that will eventually come Williams’ way will likely be heavily influenced by what happens during the 2018 season. Williams has talked about a desire to kick his game up a level this year and the upside that would come with putting together a disruptive season provides plenty of reason to keep the contract on the back burner for the time being.

They’re both very passionate coaches, Fitzpatrick told reporters on Tuesday. They’re both really hands-on. The only difference is Coach Saban yells a little bit more. But that’s about it. Coach Gase is a great coach. He’s a real energetic coach. All of the players love playing for him. I love playing for him and I’m happy that he’s my head coach.

Fitzpatrick laughed when he said Saban yells a little bit more, and Saban gave Fitzpatrick high praise before the draft, suggesting that Fitzpatrick should be a top-five pick.

And Fitzpatrick definitely feels prepared to play in the NFL after playing college football for Saban.

NBA Rumors: Cavaliers’ LeBron James to Los Angeles Lakers?

Now that the Cleveland Cavaliers are in a 3-0 hole vs. the Golden State Warriors, the rumors about where LeBron James will play next season are about to heat up.

The latest report, published on Monday by The Big Lead, has James heading out west — to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Here is a breakdown of the rumor, per Bobby Burack of The Big Lead:

I’m a big fan of whatever’s working. Keep going with it until they make you change.

Sounds simple, but there’s a lot of prep work that goes into figuring out how to read pitchers and work hitters.

I’ll watch guys during the game whether I’m playing or not and I’m watching guys at home on video to see what’s working, what’s not working, Romine said. It’s my job. I’ve got to be ready to go in at any time. I don’t want to disrupt anything.

It may have been even more significant that Gronkowski, maybe the most difficult physical matchup in the NFL, was in a good space. Like Brady, he skipped OTAs. Unlike Brady, the all-world tight end spent part of the offseason contemplating whether he wanted to retire, given the wear and tear of so many injuries.

Gronk, admitting he needed time to allow his body to recover, seemed even fresher than Brady — complete with a couple of spectacular catches on deep routes, demonstrative swaggering and a lot of whooping that suggested just how much fun it was to be back in, well, Belichick’s camp.

The other significant noise came from Brady himself. He may have been with the group that took it on the chin from Belichick. But he could dish it out, too, wasting no time to exert his leadership.

It’s always loud out there with him, noted slot receiver Julian Edelman, back in the flow after a torn ACL wiped out his 2017 season. He’s an intimidating S.O.B.

He’s incredibly athletic. I believe that he’s incredibly talented, Zayat said. I do believe that he has the ability, speed, stamina.

Julio Jones to be absent from Falcons’ minicamp, GM says

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones inforeagles_024med the team that he won’t attend mandatory minicamp, general manager Thomas Dimitroff said in a statement released Monday.

We have been in contact with Julio and his representation,” Dimitroff said. We will not discuss those conversations publicly, except to say we feel they have been productive and constructive. We understand the concerns and thoughts from their perspective. Although not ideal, Julio informed us today he would not be attending mini-camp.

Jones told TMZ last month that there is no bad blood between him and the team. He has been working out with Hall of Fame receiver Terrell Owens this offseason.

Quarterback Matt Ryan said he had no concern” about Jones missing the voluntary part of the offseason program, despite much talk about Jones being healthy enough to work on timing with Ryan.

Jones, entering his eighth NFL season, is looking for his fifth straight season with 1,400-plus receiving yards.

Winslow, 34, was driving the SUV when stopped by San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies and identified as the man who had entered the residence. He was booked at the Vista Detention Facility and was being held on $50,000 bail.

In a statement, attorney Harvey A. Steinberg said: Mr. Winslow emphatically denies committing any burglary. He would have no need to burglarize or steal anything from anyone at a trailer park. He looks forward to being vindicated once this matter is fully investigated and adjudicated through the court system.

Winslow, the son of Hall of Fame tight end Kellen Winslow, has not played in the NFL since 2013, his lone season with the New York Jets. He missed four games that season because of a suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs. He also was arrested that year and charged with possession of synthetic marijuana.

Winslow, a first-round pick in 2004, had his best season with the Cleveland Browns in 2007, when he caught 82 passes for 1,106 yards and five touchdowns and was a Pro Bowl selection. He also played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New England Patriots during his career.

Odell Beckham Jr. is getting closer and closer to not setting foot on the field until he gets his new contract.

eagles_025That was the report in late March — that he won’t do anything until he receives the final reward he clearly deserves from the Giants. And with mandatory minicamp happening this week, Beckham reportedly will be there. The question is whether he’ll be on the field.

Also, the report says he’s traveling to New York with plans of attending. Plans often change. And maybe his plans will change, if his agent tells him that it’s not looking as if the Giants will be giving Beckham the kind of contract he wants.

That’s ultimately the question. Will the Giants give him what he wants? If not, will they trade him to a team who will? That window seems to be closed for now; depending on the depth of the divide between team and player, maybe it will creep back onto the table.

C.J. has really jumped out, Carroll said, via the Seattle Times. He’s looked good now. He knows he’s battling [for a roster spot].

The Seahawks currently have five running backs on the roster: Penny, Prosise, Chris Carson, J.D. McKissic, and Mike Davis.

Of course, the Seahawks have their leading rushing from last year, by a margin of 346 yards. His name is Russell Wilson.

Which sort of underscores the entire problem.

Blame the blister! The Los Angeles Angels have a lot of decisions to make regarding their rotation in the upcoming week, after Shohei Ohtani’s placement on the DL. While odds are good that Andrew Heaney, fresh off his birthday shutout this past Tuesday, will see two starts in the upcoming week and that Jaime Barria is likely to return from Triple-A Salt Lake for a start in the upcoming Seattle series, there’s too much uncertainty here to predict the exact day any of the team’s starters will actually end up taking the mound.

This is where it made the man. You’re on your own, really.

Most metropolitan cities in America have hidden abysses like this, Lewis points out, where football can serve as a beacon of light out of such hell. Or can steer you into a different kind of hell. The sport that can save you can also kill you later in life.

Lewis absolutely knows the symptoms will only get worse. Walking beagles_030ack to his Jeep, he turns pale and quiet and concerned.

You have to keep it moving.

So Lewis climbs back in his Jeep and, again, says to follow him. He has to pick up Jazz from school at 3. We stop briefly at his childhood home, redirect north to Buckhead, lose each other in traffic, find each other and pull into another bar at 2:45 p.m.

Lewis steps out and slaps his hands together.

Somebody needs to hit him, he says. Get him right!

And, given that choiceagain that he mentioned, what would he decide? He’d eyeball that Vikings safety taking a 45-degree angle, lower his shoulder and deliver a blow. No stepping out of bounds. No mercy.

Past the Falcons stadium, onto the highway, toward his old neighborhood, the white Jeep accelerates out of vision. Lane to lane, Lewis knifes through heavy traffic and I lose him.

Maybe he forgot where we’re going? Maybe he’s waiting for his brain to recalibrate?

Hard to say. All Lewis said was to follow him.

Giants GM Dave Gettleman has lymphoma, though ‘the prognosis is positive’

Dave Gettleman, who rejoined the New York Giants as their general manager in December, announced Tuesday that he has lymphoma, a cancer of the white blood cells. He said he is weighing his treatment options but that doctors have told him the prognosis is positive.

Ertz and his Eagles teammates were shown kneeling in several photos during the Fox News segment, but Ertz said the players were kneeling in prayer, not to raise awareness of social injustice and police brutality issues, as other players have done. Trump has used the pregame demonstrations as a rallying point, and Vice President Pence departed early from an Indianapolis Colts game last fall when members of the San Francisco 49ers took a knee.

Ertz spotted the photos in the Fox report, tweeting Tuesday morning, This can’t be serious. … Praying before games with my teammates, well before the anthem, is being used for your propaganda?! Just sad. I feel like you guys should have to be better than this. Ertz’s tweet quickly was shared on social media, gathering more than 83,000 likes and 33,000 retweets within six hours. And by midmorning, the network had apologized for the report on Fox News at Night with Shannon Bream.

Luck has considerable sports-executive experience, in other words, and his hiring shows that XFL founder Vince McMahon is taking things a little more seriously this time around. The pro-wrestling overlord’s first attempt at an alternative to the NFL, in 2001, was marked by slapdash preparation and terrible football, dooming it to a lone year of existence.

In announcing the new XFL earlier this year — the league is scheduled to launch in January 2020 — McMahon promised shorter, faster-paced games than the NFL. He also said players with any sort of criminal record would be prohibited from joining the league and that players would be required to stand for the national anthem.

Luck reiterated that last part Tuesday.

We respect individual freedoms, Luck told Bleacher Report’s Mike Freeman. But we will require players to stand for the national anthem.

New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman sent a clear message during the draft.

He’s all-in on quarterback Eli Manning going into his age-37 season, and there’s an urgency to win now. How do we know?

At No. 2, the Giants went with a running back, which indicates a need to build around Manning. Gettleman also acquired Will Hernandez to strengthen the interior of the offensive line. The UTEP product should help keep defensive tackles away from Manning and clear lanes for Saquon Barkley.

Barkley immediately elevates the Giants backfield that currently rosters 31-year-old Jonathan Stewart, 2017 fourth-rounder Wayne Gallman, third-year ball-carrier Jalen Simmons and undrafted rookie Robert Martin.

Secondly, it would serve the Jets well to give Bridgewater time on the field to showcase him as a trade asset. Once Darnold starts, there’s no turning back, but it’s not going to happen until midway through the year at the earliest. McCown has never started a full 16-game season, and he’s not going to start at age 39.

The Browns need a lead cornerback after trading Jason McCourty to the New England Patriots. The front office acquired slot cornerback T.J. Carrie and E.J. Gaines. The latter put together a solid year with the Bills, but injuries have cost him several games in the past three seasons.

It helped that their rookie class was one of the best in league history. They became the first team in half a century to possess both the Offensive (Alvin Kamara) and Defensive (Marshon Lattimore) Rookies of the Year, but it didn’t stop there. First-round offensive tackle Ryan Ramczyk and second-round safety Marcus Williams also became tremendous assets as regular starters.

There’s no reason to believe those four won’t continue to improve coming off their first full offseasons in the league. And if that happens, a team that was a Super Bowl contender in 2017 might actually become a favorite in 2018.  bucks_238

The Browns will be on ‘Hard Knocks’ in 2018. Here’s what we want to see

The NFL announced Thursday that the Cleveland Browns will be featured on the next season of HBO’s Hard Knocks. They were one of six teams that couldn’t decline being the subject of this upcoming season, as per the NFL’s rules.

How your grandpa thinks bets are currently placed: Bettors sneak into a seedy bar under a railroad trestle, filled with people with guys like Walter White, Nicely-Nicely and Tony Bagabocceballs. There, scofflaws hand wads of twenties over to scar-faced men in fedoras and mumble things like “Let it ride on the Cleveland Browns. Papa needs a new pair of Air Monarchs!” If the bets pays off, they squander the money on wanton women and bathtub gin (which is probably a real thing in Brooklyn bars). If they lose, a guy who looks like Danny Trejo breaks their fingers in the parking lot.

Browns general manager John Dorsey, who kept his decision to select Mayfield secret until the day before the draft, admitted reluctance that his team will be forced to open its facility and practices to HBO’s cameras. But the Browns couldn’t opt out. NFL rules only exempt teams that have a first-year head coach, have made the playoffs in the past two seasons or have been on Hard Knocks in the last 10 years from participating. The Browns were one of six teams (along with the Broncos, 49ers, Ravens, Chargers, Redskins) who could not say no this year.

There will probably be breakout stars, like 2017 No. 1 pick Myles Garrett, a defensive end who is as quirky off the field — he loves dinosaurs — as he is menacing on it. There’s wide receiver Josh Gordon, who returned last year after a drug-related suspension that lasted more than two seasons. There’s Taylor, underappreciated during his tenure in Buffalo (a team he took to the playoffs in 2017) and likely to be overshadowed in Cleveland. And then there’s Mayfield, the charismatic 2017 Heisman Trophy winner who was the most polarizing player in college football — and possibly in this draft class — because of his brash personality.cowboys_052

Forrest Lamp had knee procedure during comeback from torn ACL

Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams is trying to win over doubters after not doing much during his rookie season.

Williams may have fallen short of expectations, but the first-round pick did get on the field. That’s more than second-round guard Forrest Lamp was able to do after tearing his ACL during training camp.

In the days after Kirk’s death, there was an outpouring in Pella and across the NBA. The community where the Korver family is a pillar was devastated. For decades, the Korvers had been there for families in distress. Kevin had visited so many people in the hospital, presided over so many funerals, offered so much support. Now the roles had been reversed.

“Kirk was very beloved in his own right here,” said Wade Van Vark, who taught the Korver boys math at Pella High School. “Like the other brothers, he was a role model, a hero to a generation of young kids. The Korvers have done so much for so many here and touched so many lives that to know they were hurting in that way, to see them go through that, it was crushing to our community.”

The vote needed three-fourths approval, or at least 24 owners, to pass.

“Look, we all know that the Cowboys are the team that networks would like to see as much as possible on their schedules, so they’re getting the experience with the top-notch groups that come through there when you talk about a production meeting,” said Stephanie Druley, ESPN’s senior vice president of event and studio production. The experience prepares former Cowboys stars to “be extremely eloquent and able to understand sort of what this side of the camera is like,” she added.

Similarly, CBS chairman Sean McManus and lead play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz were impressed with Romo’s personality/football acumen long before he retired. Both thought Romo would be a TV natural. Nantz knew he was right as soon as the duo sat down to call their first practice game.

“This is going to sound crazy to say, but by the time we finished the fourth quarter of that [practice] game, I thought he was ready to go on the air,” Nantz said during the NFL playoffs. “His instincts are off the charts.”ravens_011
